MINIART - Art Show by DWG

Added on by martine nicolay.

Today I will share some of the inspiration from my new home town. The first thing I usually report of Dakar is its creative environment. From its colorful and unique car rapides  to its street art, where ever you go you are surrounded by art!

And this weekend was one of Dakar art scene highlights, the Art Show organized by the Dakar Women Group. It was one of the finest selections I have seen so far. Over 500 pieces from more than 50 artists born, raised, working or living in Senegal!

But see for yourself and tell me that this does not inspire you to create!

MINIBLOG is BACK!

Added on by martine nicolay.

HELLO!

MINITECTURE's blog is back! It has been exactly one year since my last post!

Matthieu and I are still in Dakar, the girls are growing so fast, and a lot has changed since... soon it will be ONE year that MINITECTURE is not only a blog but expanded into a creative outlet and shop! Last year, Stina and I, inspired by the color and pattern choices of african waxes, started creating playtents and buntings! Since I could not stop creating and trying out new products for the MINITECTURE collection!

Unfortunately, my friend Stina left to go back to Sweden. Let me tell you it is more fun to be 2, but it won't keep me from stopping what we started.

Also I am back to be an architect in a regular office. So I am an architect in the morning and an minitect in the afternoon ... I am feeling pretty FULLfilled these days.

Enough about me, let me show you some of MINITECTURE's latest creations:

These photographs are taken by the wonderful Malick Welli in Medina, Dakar. Malick is a young and very talented senegalese photographer and an amzing friend

To see the whole photoshoot go here!

MINIDAKAR - Many firsts at Accro Baobab

Added on by martine nicolay.

Early December, we met with friends at an adventure center in the midst of baobab trees - Espace Accro Baobap near Somone! It was my first time outside of Dakar and my first time seeing a baobab tree - good times!

Unfortunately, with my belly I was not allowed much at the adventure park - hopefully we will be back soon!

Léonore had a blast! (Simba included - the school mascot - adopted for that weekend)

MINIDAKAR - Raphaëlle is here!

Happy 2015!

In Dakar, we ended 2014 the best way possible.

Raphaëlle was born on December 30th, 54 cm long and 3600 g light. We are  all well and delighted to be a family of four now.

For 2015, I am wishing for a year going from MINI to TECTURE. Enjoying these first weeks and months of getting to know our new family member and slowly moving into job or project search over the year.

This transition, from MINI to TECTURE, from small fragile beings to concrete structure is also what I predict for this blog. A friend once told me to post only what comes naturally to me, and I confess, for now, it is on my little ones and my family. Nevertheless, I have ideas and projects in the back of my mind, but I will get to them in a few weeks time.

MINIDAKAR - 2014 Good City Index

Added on by martine nicolay.

After dreaming last week of living in and experiencing Japan (here and here), I found out over the weekend that Dakar made it on the GOOD City Index. I was surprised and proud to see that Dakar - my new hometown made it to the TOP 10!!

Don't be fooled, GOOD magazine shares creative solutions for living well and doing good. So the GOOD CITY INDEX is nothing else than ...

... a celebration of the 50 cities around the world that best capture the elusive quality of possibility. Wade through this year’s index and you will notice trends, quirks, contradictions, and surprises. But more than anything else, you will notice inspiration. Some will come from spectacular gestures, like the iconic Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong, and some from more humble moments, like the streetlight project being rolled out in Nairobi’s Kibera slum. But each will share an underlying ethos of citizens creatively engaging with their surroundings with the expectation that, with a little work, things can get better.

For Dakar, I hope to be done soon with settling in and discover more of what the city has to offer. I definitely keep you up to date here on MINITECTURE with my findings!

carrapide

As for the list goes : The Raw Material Company has been absolutely on my list to visit since I have landed, and I cannot wait to hop on to a car rapide (see picture above) with WI-FI connection!! (to my Dakar readers - has anybody spotted one of those yet!) For today, I will leave you with a Journal Rappé session - enjoy!

MINIPLAY - Aqua Jump

Added on by martine nicolay.

The last 2 weeks we have been struggling with heat and colds due to the AC, settling in school/work and finding a house or apartment for the next 2 years while getting used to Dakar's usuals - no water and when there is water, electricity goes out !

Nevertheless, these days in Dakar we are enjoying especially being so close to the ocean and jumping on mama's bed. I might have found the perfect combination for her/our favourite activities : the AQUA JUMP water trampoline

It is way out of my price range but just imagine how much fun one could have - especially our little crazy fish these days!

MINIDAKAR - first impressions

Added on by martine nicolay.

After one week in Dakar, I thought I would share a quick first impression from here.

It is very hot in Dakar. They say we have around 29°C, but with the humidity it feels more like 42°. So last week we have been very busy cooling down in swimming pools and installing AC's.

And in-between we were looking for preschools for Léonore, visiting houses to live in and collecting advices from dear fellow expats and friends over drinks and food!
